Teaching of Ephesians
{The Ephesians epistle was a circular letter written (in the third person) to the entire Roman province in 62 A.D. by Paul, the only apostle to the Gentiles and Church of Ephesus (located in western Turkey) while in his first Roman imprisonment and third missionary journey {Acts 19:1-20:1}. Ephesus along with Philippi was one of the greatest churches of the Roman Empire and had a great pivotal impact in the spread of Christianity.
After writing Thessalonians, Galatians, Corinthians, and Romans, Paul in 58 A.D., had an emotional, subjective, carnal desire to venture back to the temple in Jerusalem to make a Nazarite vow [although warned three times not to do so by friends (Peter and James) as well as the prophet Agabus in Acts 21.1-3, 4-19, 21.11-14] which resulted in a riot. Acts 21.20 indicates there were a large number (some 100,000 members) under pastor-teacher James' (the half-brother of Jesus). Instead of traveling East from Ephesus to Rome in fulfillment of God's will to be the pastor-teacher of the church of Rome and apostle to the Gentiles {Romans 13.1}, Paul (like Jonah), traveled west to Jerusalem for a reunion with Gamaliel and his old Sanhedrin buddies {Romans 15.25}.
Some 40 Jews took an oath and signed a pact to kill Paul. The Roman garrison stationed next door in the Mark Anthony barracks at Mount Zion had a battalion commander named Claudius Lysius (equivalent to a Colonel), who had earned his citizenship for 7 years and saved Paul from a riot by having him arrested. Although arrested, Paul had a right of appeal (Kaiserro Appelo) to Caesar (Nero). Upon interrogation he found Paul to be a Roman citizen by birth, Jewish by race, and educated in Jerusalem. Subsequently he was sent to Rome under a detachment (after the shipwreck on Malta where the viper bit his hand) and placed under house arrest for four years via the elite Praetorian guard (Centurions - combat medal winners paid six times the average Roman soldier). Paul was from a well-to-do family and was a tent-maker by trade. He was so wealthy a centurion suggested he buy his own house.
The first time Paul appeared before Nero he was sent to a Praetorian camp (where he wrote Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians, and Philemon in 62 A.D.) but was released because Nero could not find anything wrong with him (like John who Nero had banned to the isle of Patmos instead of martyring him). The second time Paul appeared before Nero (who feared him greatly), Nero had him taken outside of the walls of Rome and beheaded (Roman citizens could not be crucified) by a Roman lichter (who carried an ax in a knapsack) in 68 A.D..
Paul had a writing style in which the hearer did not have to be present to understand the exact content and tone of his message. Paul was one, if not the, greatest communicator of Bible Doctrine in the New Testament and genius of the ancient world. His childhood mentor was Gamaliel, an expert in the Mosaic law, as was another student, James, the half-brother of Jesus. Paul, a rising star of Judaism, was a great student of the Law. Via the Holy Spirit, he understood 5th century ionic classical Greek of the philosophers, e.g., Plato, Aristole, Socrates, Euscules, and Sophocles. Paul witnessed first hand the stoning of Stephen. Prior to his Damascus road experience (as an unbeliever), was known as Saul of Tarsus, the youngest and greatest of the Pharisees of the Sanhedrin (a Hebrew of the Hebrews) equivalent to reaching the rank of General at age 21. As Saul, he had a false sense of destiny, was extremely moral, strict, arrogant, zealous, religious activist, chief of sinners, dogmatic, persecutor, and killer of Christians. He was a great witness to judges Felix and Festus and Herod the Great (as well as his daughters Bernice and Drucilla).}
