we make an urgent request of you,
brethren,

that the Day of the Lord
{Technical for the 2nd Advent at the END of the Tribulation}
is

[Note: Some manuscripts had "Christos" instead of "Kurious" making this "Day of Christ". The better manuscripts had "Day of the Lord" and since this is technical, it is the translation used here. From the context, it is the 2nd Advent in view.]

Let no one [thoroughly]
deceive

[as Satan set himself to oppose God, this person will
set himself up on Earth to oppose God]
and
exhaults [huperairomai] himself
above
all that receives the designation of "God"
{he will combine military and 'religion' and he will head it}

all that is the object of worship [sebasma] . . .
with
the result that
he
sits in the temple of God
{pseudo-copying of Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father -
this man will put an image of the man of sin in the temple
attempting to glorify him and through him, Satan}
and
as so proclaims himself.
{Note: Paul is stating that the Tribulation will NOT occur until the Church departs to meet Christ in the Sky. THEN will be revealed the man of lawlessness and not before. And this man is also called 'the son of perdition'. This is a term only used for Judas and for the 'man of lawlessness''. Satan's person shall most likely lead a revolution against God in the Tribulation mimicking Satan's heavenly revolt.}
[Note: Since the time of the Caesars declaring themselves to be gods or descended from a god, most people think this means the Man of Sin will "make himself like god". It is my opinion that this man is replicating what Satan did. I do not think Satan tried to "make himself like god". Instead he tried to replace God's representative to all creation - the Most High - God's man (Isaiah 14:13-14). That is what was repeated in the Korah revolution (Numbers 16:1 - 35) and will be repeated in the Tribulation.]
5~~Do
you not remember when
I
was yet face to face with you,
{Paul is indicating a face to face teaching situation}
I
kept on teaching you these things?
[Note: Repetition is an important principal in teaching. Human learn by hearing the same things taught over and over. The listener then needs to concentrate on what is taught. He compares it with the doctrine already in his soul. If he accepts it as Truth, he metabolizes it into the norms and standards of the soul. In the Hebrew, this whole process is summarized in the word `shama.]
6~~And
so you know [oida]
"[The
One Who] . . . actively [is] restraining" {God the Holy Spirit}
[katecho - present active participle]
for
the purpose that he
{the man of lawlessness}
might
receive disclosure
in
his own 'historical era'/dispensation [kairos]
{Tribulation}.
{Note: God the Holy Spirit indwells all believers in the Church Age. At the end of the Church Age, all believers are raptured. God the Hold Spirit no longer 'holds back' or restrains the man of lawlessness now that the Church is removed. Evil will run rampant. This indicates that man of lawlessness belongs to a different dispensation - the Tribulation - the continuation of the Jewish Age - Daniel's 70th week.}

of
lawlessness
[anomia - "a" is the negative prefix - nomia is "law"]
is
already operational [energeo ede energeo]
{intensification of the angelic conflict}.

One Who now restrains [arti katecho]
{God the Holy Spirit}

"becomes what He was not before"/"receives

of the way.
{Note: The original meaning of 'mystery' was of secret doctrines known only to those in the Greek 'fraternity'. Here it means Church Age believers.}
{Note: The Church Age is the most intensified stage of the Angelic Conflict. But Satan's works continue to be held back by God the Holy Spirit. After the rapture of the church, the pivot of believers is removed and God will stop restraining Satan and the Tribulation will be just horrible.}
8a~~And
then/"at that time" [kai tote]
{in the Tribulation}
the
lawless one shall receive revealing . . .
whom
the Lord Jesus
will
annihilate/consume/destroy [analisko]
{Christ will personally kill this man}
with
the breath
[pneuma - means spirit or breath]
of
His mouth.
[Note: This is very important. Jesus will destroy them with the Breath of His Mouth. See what happens to the soldiers in the Garden of Gethsemane (John 18:6) when Jesus says the first half of His Holy Name (tell them "I am . . . the I am" Exodus 3:14a).]

fact,
shall
"neutralize him"/"render idle" [katargeo]
by
means of the glamorous display [epiphaneia]
of
His coming [parousia].
{2nd Advent here}
{Note: Two separate 'lawlessnesses' are in view here. First, the man of lawlessness will be known only in the Tribulation. Second, the doctrines of lawlessness are revealed in the Church Age . . . since all doctrines about the Church Age were held back from the Old Testament believers.}
9~~Whose
{man of lawlessness}
presence
in history . . .
shall
be according to the "modus operandi"/
"superhuman
power/workings" [energeia]
of
Satan
with
all "overt power" [dunamis] . . .
and
by means of "miraculous signs" [semeion] . . .
even
"wondrous miracles" [teras]
of
the lie [pseudos].
{Note: The lie is the whole realm of satanic doctrine. In the Tribulation, this man of lawlessness will be the puppet of Satan himself. He will create pseudo miracles, etc. to fool the world. His goal is to have people worship himself as deity.}

10~~And
by means of all deception of unrighteousness
to
those who are being
'led
astray'/ deprived/ ruined/destroyed/'caused to perish' {apollumi}
because
they have not received the love {mental agape love}
of
the Truth/doctrine . . .
in
order that they might be delivered or saved.
{Note: Apollumi has the tense of a tendential (sic) present . . . which means the action has not taken place, but the syntax says it is a future certainty. Paul is writing what he is told by God the Holy Spirit. But this syntax indicates that Paul is not happy that these people have negative volition and will be utterly destroyed - caused to perish.}

And so for this reason

God shall send them . . .

wander around without meaning or direction}

that they might believe

[Note: If the compartment of the soul (conscience) does not store the norms and standards provided by the study of the Bible, it acts like a vacuum that "sucks in" false doctrines and that person believes the lies of creatures (human and others).]

brethren

the Lord

The God has elected you

before the beginning {eternity past}
unto/toward
salvation [soteria]
by
means of the
set-apart-ness/sanctifying
[hagiasmos] . . .
Spirit

[Referring to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit at the point
when the person actually believes - God knew in eternity
past the person would be born and would believe]
and
by means of faith [pistis - faith or that which is believed]
in
Doctrine/Truth [aletheia].
[Note: Salvation is always by faith. It is stated in a number of ways. But in the Church Age, we are told quite clearly (the age when all the mysteries are revealed) that faith in the Deity of Jesus Christ results in salvation. Why? Because you can not believe God sent Jesus without believing in God.]
14~~
Into which {salvation}
He
called you [kaleo]
by
means of [dia]
our
gospel/'good news' [euaggelion]
{by our response to the gospel we use our free will or volition to
accept Christ}
to
the obtaining/'possessing as your own' [peripoiesis]
the
glory [doxa]
of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
[Note: So, chronologically, God called us in eternity past since he could look down through history and see those of us in the Church Age who eventually would believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ and accept His One Work on the cross for our salvation. At that point, we are not only saved, but become in Union with the Son. And the Son graciously shares all that He has and all that He is with us. The glory is all His. He allows us to share in His Glory. And, Jesus "wears" Chruch Age believers like a "crown of glory". When we allow His Divine Viewpoint to operate through us while He is still in heaven awaiting His 2nd Advent, all that we do under the filling of God the Holy Spirit, brings glory to Jesus. It is His Thinking and all credit is His.]
15~~Therefore,
brethren,
stand
fast/persevere [steko]
{this is a command to be consistent},
and
"seize and hold as your own" [krateo]
the
"categories of doctrine"/"bodies of precepts" [paradosis]
which
you have been "taught in a teaching situation" [didasko]
whether
if by word [logos]
or
if by our epistle/letter [epistole].
[Note: Isaiah 28:10 tells us how believers are to grow to spiritual maturity and Paul is reiterating it here. Once a believer, a person should study in a teaching situation when possible. And, if that is not possible, then study the Bible - line upon line, precept upon precept - a little here and a little there.]
16-17~~Now
our Lord Jesus Christ Himself,
and
God,
even
our Father,
and
having "loved us based on who and what they are" [agapao],
and
having given us eternal encouragement/exhortation [paraklesis]
and
"good of intrinsic value" [agathos]
hope/'absolute
confidence' [elphis]

the strongest possible desire of encouragement/exhortation"

[kardia is used technically for the thinking part of the brain - this
section means that God is giving us GREAT encouragement to
take in doctrine and learn Divine Viewpoint (to be applied once
learned]
and
stabilize/strengthen [sterizo]
yourself
in the sphere of every
"good
of intrinsic value" [agathos] word [logos]
and
[good of intrinsic value] Production/work [ergon].
[Note: When produced under the filling of God the Holy Spirit and using Divine Viewpoint, "ergon" means "Divine Good Production".]
