Joshua

Chapter 6
{Status of Jericho}
1~~Now Jericho was straightly shut up
  {closed the gates and readied for siege}
because of the children of Israel.
None went out,
and none came in.

2-3~~And the Jehovah/God said unto Joshua,
"I have given into your hand Jericho {GRACE},
and the king thereof,
and the mighty men of valor."

{Order of the March}
3-5~~"You shall compass/'walk around' the city,
all you men of war {a corps of troops goes first},
and go round about the city once.
Thus you shall do six days. 4~~
And seven priests shall carry before the Ark
seven trumpets of rams' horns
and the seventh day
you shall compass the city seven times,
and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.5~~
And it shall come to pass,
that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn,
and when you hear the sound of the trumpet,
all the people shall shout with a great shout;
and the wall of the city shall fall down flat,
and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him."

{Note: RBT says that first is an armed corps of troops. Second come 7 priests go first with rams' horns. Third comes the Ark of the Covenant. And, then RBT says another corps of troops would follow (and from verse 9 we see that they do). From a human viewpoint Joshua's flanks will be exposed. But he trusts in the Lord and does as commanded.}

6~~And Joshua the son of Nun
called the priests, and said unto them,
"Take up the Ark of the Covenant,
and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns
before the Ark of the Jehovah/God."

7~~And he said unto the people,
"Pass on, and compass the city,
and let him who is armed
pass on before the Ark of the Jehovah/God."

8~~And it came to pass,
when Joshua had spoken
unto the people,
that the seven priests
bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns
passed on before Jehovah/God
  {the Man with the drawn sword from chapter 5},
and blew with the trumpets
and the Ark of the Covenant
of the Jehovah/God followed them.

9~~And the armed men went before/'in front of' the priests
who blew with the trumpets,
and the rearward {2nd corps of troops}
came after the Ark,
the priests going on,
and blowing with the trumpets.

{Note: The Ark speaks of Christ. The 7 trumpets speak of judgment as they do in Revelation. So this is the last opportunity for the people in Jericho to believe in Christ and be saved.}

10~~And Joshua had commanded the people, saying,
"You shall not shout,
nor make any noise with your voice,
neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth,
until the day I bid you shout . . .
then you shall shout."

{Note: RBT says you can imagine what the people in Jericho were yelling from the wall as the Jews marched for 7 days. Probably not too nice! Anyway, the command was to keep your mouth shut. Why? See John 3:36. In witnessing, give the gospel and keep your mouth shut to any criticisms or false issues.}

{Verses 11-16: Commands All Obeyed - Action of Faith}
11~~So the Ark of the Jehovah/God
compassed/'went around' the city,
going about it once.
And they came into the camp,
and lodged in the camp.

12-13~~And Joshua rose early in the morning,
and the priests took up the Ark of the Jehovah/God. 13~~
And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns
before the Ark of the Jehovah/God
went on continually,
and blew with the trumpets
and the armed men went before them
but the rearward came
after the Ark of the Jehovah/God,
the priests going on,
and blowing with the trumpets.

14~~And the second day
they compassed/'walked around' the city once,
and returned into the camp.
So they did six days.

15~~And it came to pass on the seventh day,
that they rose early about the dawning of the day,
and compassed/'walked around' the city
after the same manner seven times.
Only on that day they compassed/'walked around' the city
seven times.

16~~And it came to pass at the seventh time,
when the priests blew with the trumpets,
Joshua said unto the people,
"Shout! For Jehovah/God has given you the city.

17a~~And the city shall be cherem/accursed/ban.

{Note: See the concept of cherem. It is very important. It means to be accursed and not subject to redemption it and all in it is 'dedicated/sacrificed to the Lord' - see Leviticus 27 Cherem is a type of Christ. Christ was cherem so that we could be redeemed. He died for us because He took the cherem to Himself and He could not be redeemed. Jericho was the first city taken and was therefore the firstfruits of the land. It could not be taken until all the redeemed are things already redeemed and not cherem - Rahab and her family and their goods.}

17b~~Even it,
and all that are therein,
to the Jehovah/God.
Only Rahab the prostitute shall live,
she and all who are with her in the house,
because she hid the messengers that we sent. 18~~
And you, keep yourselves from the cherem/'accursed thing',
lest you make yourselves cherem/accursed,
when you take of the cherem/'accursed thing',
and make the camp of Israel a cherem/curse,
and trouble/disturb it.

19~~ But {the exception}
all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron,
are consecrated unto the Jehovah/God.
They shall come into the treasury of the Jehovah/God."

{Battle of Jericho - Pretty Short Battle - Fall of Jericho}
20-21~~So the people shouted
when the priests blew with the trumpets.
And it came to pass,
when the people heard the sound of the trumpet,
and the people shouted with a great shout,
that the wall fell down flat,
so that the people went up {up the steep hill}
into the city,
every man straight before him,
and they took the city. 21~~
And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city,
both man and woman,
young and old,
and ox, and sheep, and ass,
with the edge of the sword.

{Note: See Leviticus 18:20-25 to see what the inhabitants of the Promised Land were doing and is one reason why all the residents and animals of Jericho had to die here. It was to protect the rest of the human race.}

{Note: See also Deuteronomy 18:9-12.}

22~~But Joshua had said unto the two men
who had spied out the country,
"Go into the prostitute's {Rahab's} house,
and bring out thence the woman,
and all that she has, as you swore unto her."

23~~And the young men that were spies went in,
and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother,
and her brethren,
and all that she had
and they brought out all her kindred,
and left them outside the camp of Israel
  {at this point they were not allowed in the camp}.

24~~And they burnt the city with fire,
and all that was therein
only the silver, and the gold,
and the vessels of brass and of iron,
they put into the treasury of the house of the Jehovah/God.

25~~ And Joshua saved Rahab the prostitute alive,
and her father's household,
and all that she had
and she 'permanently dwelled' in Israel
  {there is no provision for this to happen unless you become
  part of Israel and from Matthew 1:4 compared
  with I Chronicles 2:10-11 - we find that she married
  Salmon (he was a prince and had a son Boaz who is famous
  for Ruth and Boaz was the grandfather of Jesse and the
  Great Grandfather of David - and they were in the line of
  David and of the Messiah - Jesus Christ}
even unto this day
because she hid the messengers,
which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26~~And Joshua cursed them at that time,
saying, "Cursed be the man
before the Jehovah/God,
who rises up and builds this city Jericho.
He shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn,
and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

{Note: This is a prophecy that is fulfilled in I Kings 16:34 when Hiel/Chiy'el. Jericho is cherem so this man become cherem himself.}

{Note: There is a passage in Matthew that appears to be a contradiction with Mark and Luke. But, Jesus came out of the Old city of Jericho and went into the New city of Jericho and they each reported accurately what they saw.}

27~~So the Jehovah/God was with Joshua;
and his fame was sounded throughout all the country.
